Events threaten to get out of control, and the lives of many people are affected. But when one of his friends fails to pay the money he owes him, his solution is to kidnap the mans 15-year-old brother. Thus begins their tentative relationship, turning into a powerful alliance. Alpha feels like a movie that should not exist. A 19-year-old Los Angeles drug dealer seems to have it all, owning a home and several cars, while spending his days partying with friends. When Alpha is injured, the pack abandons him, and Keda and Alpha soon find that they need each other to make it back home. Eventually Keda comes back to life, however, and miraculously finds his way out, soon to encounter a pack of wolves led by the one he will call Alpha. Alpha is among the latest in the survival film category and while it definitely is a movie that plays it safe, it's an effective little movie that I believe some audiences will eat up. Tau is devastated, a memorial of rocks is laid, and the tribe moves on.
Soon the opening scene is reprised and we see where Keda lands, presumably dead on an impenetrable area of the imposing sheer cliff. At the end of the pack is at least one smart beast who figures it out, turns around and ensnares young Keda, taking him on a wild ride to the edge and tossing him over.įlash back to one week earlier, and we learn his backstory. Regardless of how much how much has been softened to suit the movie’s perspective, the end result is compelling drama with top-notch performances and a feel-good denouement. The movie wastes no time in getting to the danger and action with a thrilling battle between the tribe and a herd of bison that is tricked into heading over a steep cliff straight to their gruesome deaths. His mom (Natassia Malthe) doesn’t approve but can’t stop him. Teenage drug dealer Johnny Truelove and his friends kidnap the impressionable younger brother of a junkie who refuses to pay his debt to. It centers on Keda (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a young man who is joining his father Chief Tau’s (Johannes Haukur Johannesson, a dead ringer for a young Orson Welles) tribe to learn the harsh ways of the world and survival in primitive circumstances. Working from a screenplay by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt, this is a spare story set 20,000 years ago in prehistoric times during the last Ice Age.
